For more than 50 years, our organization has led the field of nursing leadership through professional development, advocacy and research that advances nursing leadership practice and patient care. As the field of nursing leadership evolves, we are also evolving to lead the transformation of health care.

At our 2019 annual meeting, we announced a revitalized brand and a new name that more fully reflects those we serve: the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL).

As we look to the future together, AONL will continue to advance the development of nurse leaders, equipping them to be innovative and expert leaders who lead with vision and create cultures of excellence and accountability. Our efforts to advocate for the nursing leadership specialty will remain, as we work to develop influential agents of change. And, as always, we will connect a thriving and inclusive community of nurse leaders, celebrating diverse perspectives and embracing new ideas.

Education. Advocacy. Community.

Our new tagline encapsulates our core initiatives and reinforces our work as an innovative, influential and inclusive organization. Education, advocacy and community are at the core of all that we do to advance the specialty of nursing leadership.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What prompted the name change? ▽
The change to the American Organization for Nursing Leadership is the result of a multi-year effort to assess the positioning and perceptions of our organization. A research and strategy firm was engaged to conduct quantitative and qualitative research related to member needs and our organizational brand. The findings indicated that the existing name did not full represent the diversity of nurse leaders who engage with the organization and comprise the greater nursing leadership specialty.
  • What else is changing? ▽
Our name, tagline and look are changing, but our mission of shaping health care through innovative and expert nursing leadership remains the same. Our professional development programs, advocacy initiatives and research will continue to support all nurse leaders.
