AONE offers a variety of resources to help you prepare for the CNML exam.
The exam is based on the four practice areas of financial management; human resource management; performance improvement; and strategic management and technology, derived from Nurse Manager Learning Domain Framework. The following are suggested steps and resources to assist you in your preparation.
Assessing your Readiness
Tools to help you recognize your areas of strength and identify those areas where you might benefit from some additional study or experience.
Nurse Manager Inventory Tool
As you determine your readiness to take the Certified Nurse Manager and Leader Exam, begin by utilizing the AONE Nurse Manager Inventory Tool. This self-assessment based on the Nurse Manager Learning Domain provides you with an overview of your mastery of the skills needed to perform the nurse managers job and gives an indication of your readiness to take the exam based on your experience. This diagnostic tool is an important first step as you prepare for the CNML Exam.
The CNML Candidate Handbook
The next step is to assess your readiness based on the content covered in the exam. The CNML Candidate Handbook and Application outlines not only the necessary steps for registering and taking the exam, but the distribution and types of questions within the proficiencies in the four practice areas: financial management; human resource management; performance improvement; and strategic management and technology.
CNML Self Assessment Exam (SAE)
AONE offers Self Assessment Exams (SAEs) to assist those preparing for the Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML). Developed by a group of experts in the field, the exam was created using a rigorous process similar to the development of AONE certifications. The SAEs are web-based practice tests that parallel the format, cognitive levels and difficulty of the AONE certification exams and are based on the four practice areas of financial management; human resource management; performance improvement; and strategic management and technology, derived from Nurse Manager Learning Domain Framework.

Essentials of Nurse Manager Orientation (ENMO) e-Learning
A self paced review is available through the online Essentials of Nurse Manager Orientation (ENMO) e-Learning. This eight-module course, based on the Nurse Manager Learning Domain Framework provides frontline managers, charge nurses, aspiring managers and staff leaders with the skills needed to become successful nurse leaders. In addition to being an excellent orientation course, AONE, in partnership with the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), suggests that you also consider the Essentials of Nurse Manager Orientation (ENMO) as a formal course of study for your exam preparation.
"Essentials of Nurse Manager Orientation” represents the first Web-based leadership course created specifically for nurse managers. Each online module, developed by experts in nursing management, covers key skills necessary for successful leadership and is a robust preparation tool for the CNML Exam. In response to growing user demand, AACN and AONE now offer to individual learners “Essentials of Nurse Manager Orientation,” this popular Web-based course previously available only to hospitals.
The Nurse Manager and Leader Examination Resources/Reading List can then help you identify pertinent literature and resources in those areas where you feel you need additional aid in your studies.
