“Evaluating the Impact of Nurse Manager Job Design and Practice Environment on Achieving the Quadruple Aim”
Nora Warshawsky, PhD, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, FAAN is an Associate Professor in the DNP program at the University of Kentucky, College of Nursing.
Dr. Warshawsky is transforming nursing leadership through research, education, and service. She conducted the first quantitative studies of job satisfaction and turnover among nurse managers working in the United States. Through her research, she is determining the relationships between nurse managers’ job design, role preparation, the organizational context, and outcomes of nurse managers’ practice. Her seminal contribution is the development and psychometric testing of the Nurse Manager Practice Environment Scale (NMPES) which is used by nurse leaders to assess their organizations. Her work is widely disseminated through numerous publications and national presentations. Over the course of her 35-year career, she has coached many nurse leaders in the development and implementation of evidence-based leadership strategies to create professional nursing practice environments. She is shaping graduate education for nurse leaders through her faculty role and contributions as researcher, author and editor for the Council on Graduate Education for Administrative Nursing (CGEAN). Dr. Warshawsky serves as a reviewer and editorial board member to the Journal of Nursing Administration and reviewer for the International Journal of Nursing Studies. She has also served on task forces for the American Organization of Nurse Executives and is currently the Vice Chair of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Pathway to Excellence.
Dr. Warshawsky earned her BSN from the University of Pittsburgh, MPA from Troy University, MSN from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Jennifer Rainer, PhD candidate, RN | Saint Louis University

“Speaking up or Remaining Silent: Understanding the Influences on Nurses When Patients are at Risk”
Jen Rainer has been in nursing for over 20 years, with a career split fairly evenly between bedside critical care and leadership roles. She has experience leading case management, quality, infection prevention, risk management, and critical care. For the past 5 years she served as a senior director of Quality and Patient Safety, where she was significantly involved in the care and emergency response to the first U.S. diagnosed Ebola patient. A lifelong learner, Ms. Rainer started her nursing education in a diploma program. She continued her education by obtaining a BSN, MBA, MSN, and is now completing her PhD in nursing. Ms. Rainer has several publications, including her theory on Speaking up, as well as shorter pieces on regulatory quality and family visitation. Ms. Rainer’s research area stems from her personal experience with patients as well as her experience with sentinel events and negative patient outcomes; through her work and research she is committed to ensuring a safe environment for both patients and nurses.
