AONE 2009 Education and Research Priorities

Nursing education and research are the cornerstones of the AONE and serve to fulfill both its mission and vision.  The AONE's 2008-2010 Strategic Plan (approved by the AONE Board of Directors in December 2007) guided the development of the 2009 Education & Research Priorities.    These priorities are intended to guide AONE's efforts to develop and promote education and research projects that further AONE’s overall strategic objectives.

Design of Future Patient Care Delivery Systems
Nurse leaders are active and recognized leaders in the design, implementation and evaluation of future patient care delivery systems that effectively leverage human, financial and technological resources to produce high-quality, safe, and patient-centered healthcare.

AONE encourages education and research to support this strategic goal in the following areas:

  • New technology, patient safety, and work environments that support strategies for improvements crucial to the success of the delivery system.
  • The design and implementation of patient care delivery systems that are congruent with the diversity of health belief systems within local communities and their patient populations.
  • The design and implementation of shared governance/shared decision-making models.
  • The AONE Guiding Principles that support new patient care delivery models.

Healthful Practice Environments
AONE and its members are national leaders in creating positive and healthful practice environments.  

AONE encourages education and research to support this strategic goal in the following areas:

  • Practice environments that attract and retain nurses.
  • Programs that promote professional growth and continuous learning, including mentoring of staff nurses and nursing leaders.    
  • Practice environments that are based on the Nursing Organization Alliance (NOA) Principles and Elements of a Healthful Practice/Work Environment.  
  • The AONE Guiding Principles for Future Patient Care Delivery Systems for health environments that encompass judiciously securing and using technology and resources, developing provider and patient safety guidelines, and promoting diversity in the workforce.
  • The design, implementation and evaluation of healthful practice environments.
  • The design and implementation of shared governance/shared decision-making models. 

Leadership
AONE is the national leader in strengthening America’s future nursing leadership across the continuum of care in all types and sizes of healthcare settings. 

AONE encourages education and research to support this strategic goal in the following areas:

  • Evidence-based leadership
  • Measurement of patient care quality outcomes 
  • Technology to complement patient care 
  • Working with a diverse workforce and a diverse patient population
  • Ensuring safe practice and work environments 
  • Effective and collaborative organizational cultures 
  • Promoting the value of nursing leadership 
  • Mentoring of aspiring nurse leaders and effective succession planning 
  • Professional development to address the needs of pre-executive nurse constituencies
  • Knowledge capture and transfer from nurse leaders exiting the workforce

Positioning Nurse Leaders as Valued Healthcare Executives and Managers
AONE is a national leader in positioning nursing leaders as valued healthcare executives and managers in America’s healthcare delivery system. 

AONE encourages education and research efforts to support this strategic goal in the following areas:

  • Patient safety and quality
  • Disaster preparedness
  • Workforce shortages
  • Information technology
  • Research and education programs to further the AONE Nurse Executive Competencies
  • Leadership skills of valued members of a healthcare leadership team
  • Evidence-based nursing leadership practice
  • Future patient care delivery systems and practice environments 
  • Access to care and economics of providing care
  • Forging international partnerships
