AONE Announces 2009 Annual Leadership Awards
AONE is pleased to announce four distinguished leadership award winners for 2009. The awards, which recognize the roles each honoree has played in advancing the nursing field, will be presented during the AONE Annual Meeting and Exposition, April 15-19 in San Antonio, Texas. Each honoree was nominated and chosen by the AONE board of directors.

Lifetime Achievement Award
Ann Van Slyck, RN, MSN, CNAA, FAAN, is the recipient of the AONE 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award. This award honors an AONE member who is recognized by the broader nursing community as a significant leader in the nursing profession and who has served AONE in an important leadership capacity, demonstrating the qualities of leadership and service to the nursing profession by their professional and personal example. Van Slyck, a pioneer in variable billing for nursing services based on patient acuity, has more than 35 years of experience in nursing administration. She is the former president, CEO and founder of Van Slyck & Associates, Inc., a nurse staffing service and software company that has achieved national acclaim for its work in assisting acute and specialty hospitals to improve performance outcomes.  View press release on Ann Van Slyck.

Nurse Researcher Award
Donna Sullivan Havens, PhD, RN, FAAN, is the recipient of the AONE 2009 Nurse Researcher Award. This award recognizes a nurse researcher who has made a significant contribution to nursing research and is recognized by the broader nursing community as an outstanding nurse researcher. Dr. Havens is a professor in the school of nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she teaches and mentors doctoral students studying health care systems and outcomes. Havens’ career includes a rich blend of roles in nursing practice, academe, administration and research. View press release on Donna Havens.

Honorary Member Award
Dr. Lucian Leape is the recipient of the AONE 2009 Honorary Member Award.  This award recognizes a person who has made a noteworthy contribution to the health care field and to nursing leadership practice, and who has supported the mission of AONE through work, research or service to the health care community at large. Leape is an adjunct professor of health policy in the department of health policy and management at the Harvard School of Public Health. Prior to joining the faculty at Harvard in 1988, he was professor of surgery and chief of pediatric surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. Leape is internationally recognized as a leader of the patient safety movement, beginning with the publication of his seminal article, Error in Medicine, in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1994. View press release on Lucian Leape.
