About the International Members' Scholarship Fund

The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) approved an international membership category in April 2002. To facilitate the recruitment and active involvement of international members in an economically equitable manner, international membership dues are linked to the World Bank classification of countries according to their per capita income. This approach creates a dues structure that closely matches the economic standing of each international member’s home country.

Even with this approach, many nurse leaders outside the United States cannot afford AONE annual membership dues. Believing that professional contact is important to all leaders, the AONE Institute for Patient Care Research and Education has created the AONE International Members’ Scholarship Fund that will offer AONE membership to nurses from developing countries (as designated by the World Bank). The program will also pair scholarship recipients with an American AONE colleague.

Guidelines

  1. AONE members may make monetary donations to the International Members’ Scholarship Fund of the AONE Institute for Patient Care Research and Education. These donations are tax deductible as a charitable contribution.
  2. A donor to this Fund may also volunteer to be a mentor to an international member. It is hoped that AONE members who are paired with international members will reach out and establish contact via email.
  3. International membership services are provided via the AONE Web site and e-mail. Therefore, International Members must have access to e-mail and possess the ability to read English.
  4. Potential international members may apply for a one-year dues scholarship by completing the "Scholarship Application" on the AONE Web site and submitting it to the Project Manager, Education & Federal Relations, via email (per directions on the website). Applications must be submitted by the individual who is seeking the scholarship.
  5. Scholarships are awarded for a 12-month period. Recipients may reapply for ongoing scholarships, but continuous individual awards are not guaranteed.
  6. Every effort will be made to establish mentoring relationships between AONE members and scholarship recipients.
  7. The International Members’ Scholarship Fund is managed by Sara Neuner, AONE Institute Program Coordinator. All questions should be directed to Sara at sneuner@aha.org or (312) 422-2808.

It was an honor to be recognized for achievement in an area as important as diversity. The award lends validity and credibility to the commitment and hard work of so many people throughout the Massachusetts General Hospital community who believe, as I do, that diversity and cultural competence are integral to the delivery of high-quality, patient-focused care.

Receiving the Organizational Innovation Nurse Director Award was truly a highlight of my career. To be nominated by one's peers is a tribute second to none. I am most blessed and privileged to be a member of an excellent team.
Elaine Cohen, EdD, RN, FAAN
2002 Organizational Innovation Award for Nurse Director recipient

Winning the AONE award recognized a team of dedicated individuals who pioneered advanced practice nursing in the acute care setting. The national recognition served as a platform to create additional forward motion to advance the practice of nursing, accentuate the importance of a professional practice model, and boost morale throughout the entire organization.
