1. NEW COMPETENCY TOOLS FOR NURSES RELEASED. AONE is proud to announce the release of two tools that address competencies for the nurse executive and the nurse manager. Both are aimed at assisting our members with their leadership development at different points in their careers. Click on each of the links below to view these new resources
The Nurse Manager Inventory Tool
Recognizing the widespread, expressed need for nurse manager leadership development, the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), and the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) formed an alliance - the Nurse Manager Leadership Collaborative (NMLC) -- to direct their combined knowledge, expertise and resources toward effectively fulfilling this need. The Nurse Manager Inventory Tool is a foundational component of a comprehensive initiative of the NMLC to assist nurse managers in achieving their development goals throughout their careers.
HLA Competency Directory
The Healthcare Leadership Alliance (HLA), comprised of the nation's premier professional societies [AONE, the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and its certifying body, the American College of Medical Practice Executives)], has launched the HLA Competency Directory. This searchable reference tool shows educators and healthcare leaders the expertise managers need to meet the challenges of managing the nation's healthcare organizations. The interactive directory is based on job analysis and input from professional societies representing more than 100,000 healthcare management professionals.
In addition, a program is currently under development to provide for just-in-time, standardized nurse manager orientation.
2. SMALL HOSPITALS' FINANCES UP IN 2005 ACCORDING TO S&P. Median financial ratios for small, not-for-profit hospitals improved in the past year, elevated by a positive operating environment and higher reimbursements from insurers and the federal government, according to Standard & Poor's. S&P said rating trends were "generally stable" in 2004 and 2005 for small hospitals -- those with net patient revenue of $75 million or less. Overall, improved medians were most evident at higher-rated hospitals. (Source: Modern Physician)
3. JCAHO SEEKS INPUT ON NATIONAL PATIENT SAFETY GOALS & REQUIREMENTS. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) seeks your advice on candidate new National Patient Safety Goals and Requirements being considered for 2007. The Joint Commission first introduced its National Patient Safety Goals in January 2003 in an expanded effort to improve patient safety in accredited organizations. An advisory group, made up of patient safety experts and health care professionals who have hands-on experience in addressing safety issues, assists the Joint Commission in the identification and development of the Goals and Requirements. Each year, Joint Commission staff work with the advisory group to review and update the Goals and Requirements to ensure that they continue to be relevant and focused on important safety issues. For 2007, the advisory group is likely to recommend several new Goals in addition to most of the 2006 Goals and Requirements. The candidate new 2007 Goals and Requirements can be accessed on the Joint Commission website and will be posted for comment until January 8, 2006.
4. UPDATED ICD-9 CODING GUIDELINES WENT INTO EFFECT DEC. 1. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and National Center for Health Statistics recently released updated guidelines, effective Dec. 1, for using ICD-9-CM diagnostic and procedure codes to report and bill for medical services. Approved by the AHA and the other three organizations that serve as cooperating parties for the ICD-9-CM, the guidelines are a set of rules that have been developed to complement the official conventions and instructions provided within the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition, Clinical Modification. Adherence to the guidelines is required under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. (Source: AHA News Now, November 30, 2005)
