1. AFT CALLS FOR HIGHER SALARIES FOR NURSE EDUCATORS, MORE FUNDING FOR NURSING PROGRAMS. In a report issued last week by its Nurse Faculty Shortage Task Force, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) recommends higher salaries for nurse educators and more public and private funding for nursing programs. Pointing out that tens of thousands of qualified nursing school applicants are turned away annually because there are not enough nurse educators to teach them, AFT president Edward J. McElroy said that "the problem creates a dangerous Catch-22 that ends up harming patients." "You can't solve the nurse shortage problem unless more people receive nursing degrees, but there simply aren't enough nurse educators to train more nurses," he added. The AFT recommends that school work environments need to be conducive to faculty recruitment and retention, public and private funding should be increased to properly fund and expand nursing programs, updated and nontraditional methods of instruction should be developed and implemented to prepare future nursing instructors, and nursing schools should join faculty and healthcare facilities in partnerships to support quality nursing education.
2. RWJF PUBLISHES WHITE PAPER ON CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has published "A White Paper on Cultural Transformation in Health Care," an assessment of cultural transformation in health care organizations across the country. Author Bobbi Kimball, MBA, RN, spoke to 40 executives from U.S. hospitals and health systems about their efforts to transform the culture of their facilities. The paper provides information on how organizational culture is cultivated, reinforced and enhanced to meet the needs of patients and staff.
