AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM AONE
Dear Colleague:
As this week draws to a close, our prayers and thoughts continue to be with the Gulf Coast victims of Hurricane Katrina. It is so difficult to bear the news of this disaster. It is becoming terribly clear that we have only just begun to experience the impact of this event.
We are working to identify how best AONE can help. As that plan takes shape, we will post information on our Web site. If you have any questions or thoughts, please contact me at pthompson@aha.org or (202) 626-2240.
Best regards,

Pamela A. Thompson, MS, RN, FAAN
Chief Executive Officer

1. HOSPITALS RESPOND TO HURRICANE KATRINA. The American Hospital Association (AHA) and several other hospital associations have created a Web site -- www.hospitalreliefefforts.org -- where hospitals can register what personnel and supplies they can provide for the relief effort for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The information will be shared with the Department of Health and Human Services, which will contact hospitals from which the agency would like assistance. In a conference call on Wednesday with hospitals across the country, HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt announced that HHS will create up to 40 250-bed federal emergency medical shelters to stabilize and provide basic medical care to individuals with storm-related health issues and to care for hospital and nursing home patients evacuated from the area. The agency said that it is seeking help from hospitals in staffing and managing the centers and providing basic equipment.
2. ANA INVITES COMMENTS ON PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING SCOPE AND STANDARDS. The American Nurses Association (ANA) invites comments about the draft "Public Health Nursing:Scope and Standards of Practice" available for review on the ANA Web site. Comments must be submitted electronically by the closing date of October 10, 2005.
3. NEW REPORT NOTES NATIONWIDE GROWTH OF HEALTH INFORMATION EXCHANGES. The majority of state, regional and community-based health information exchange (HIE) initiatives are already beginning to exchange electronic healthcare data, and they identify funding as their major barrier, according to a study released this week by the eHealth Initiative Foundation (eHI). The survey analyzed data from 109 responses from HIE efforts across the country. Sixty-five identified themselves as being in the advanced stage of development; among them, 25 efforts described themselves in the "fully operational" stage--an increase from a 2004 survey that found only nine operational HIE efforts nationwide. "We saw a dramatic increase in the level of interest in and activity related to HIE in regions across the country," said eHI chief executive officer Janet Marchibroda. "A number of new HIE efforts have emerged over the last year and survey results show that these efforts have matured considerably with respect to engagement of key stakeholders, organization and governance, functions and services offered, and the development and execution of technical infrastructure to support their efforts."
4. NEW YORK UNION PLANNING MOVE INTO BOSTON. According to an article in Wednesday's Boston Globe, Local 1199 of the Service Employees International Union plans to merge with a Boston local and launch a major organizing drive in the city's large teaching hospitals. The local is the largest healthcare union local in the Northeast, representing more than 250,000 workers in 76 hospitals. It is expected that Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center will be targeted, as well as Brigham and Women's Hospital, Tufts-New England Medical Center, and Children's Hospital Boston. AONE MEMBERS COLLECTING STORIES ON NURSE LEADERS' ROLES IN PATIENT SAFETY EFFORTS. AONE members Patricia Reid Ponte, DNSc, RN, FAAN, and Maureen O'Connor, RN, are seeking the assistance of AONE members in collecting stories of nurse leaders' pivotal role in creating and sustaining practice environments that advance patient safety. The stories will be used in a lecture they are delivering during this fall's annual Patient Safety Conference at Harvard Medical School and the annual University of Massachusetts School of Nursing Alumni Meeting in Amherst, MA. This work is being supported through the recognition and funding provided by AONE's inaugural McKesson Keeping Patients Safe Award that was presented to Dr. Reid Ponte earlier this year.
The purpose of the stories is to demonstrate the key role that nurses play in patient safety and the skills and strategies that have proven successful in assuring exemplary patient care. If you are a nurse leader, or know of a nurse leader, who has led with a bold strategy or approach to advance patient safety, please share your story! Some examples include the following:
- created avenues for frontline staff to be integrally involved in creating practice environments with a strong patient safety culture
- assured involvement of patients and families in care and quality and safety initiatives
- created successful approaches to interdisciplinary collaboration
- taken bold moves in advancing non-punitive approaches to medical error
- worked successfully with executive teams and boards of trustees to garner support for a patient safety culture
Stories can be short and simple, and photos are also welcome. Please send your stories by September 20 to Dr. Reid Ponte at: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney Street, D1624, Boston, MA 02115; preidponte@partners.org; (617) 632-4706 (fax). Please be sure to include the following:
- your contact information
- a statement indicating that you give permission to use your story and/or photo for the presentation; and
- if your photo includes other people, please indicate that, on behalf of each person, you are granting permission to use the photo
Thank you in advance for your participation!!!
