AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM AONE
We have created a page on our Web site that will be continually updated with the latest news and information on how members can assist in the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. Please address any comments or suggestions about this page to aone@aha.org.
According to the latest report from the American Hospital Association, the Department of Health and Human Services is developing plans to supplement staff in Louisiana and Mississippi hospitals, provide hospitals with relief staff so their workers can address their personal needs, and support shelters being developed with displaced workers. Hospitals have been asked to offer staff who are willing to volunteer for two-week shifts. More information can be found at http://www.hospitalreliefefforts.org/, and hospitals can log onto that site and indicate their willingness to provide staff. Hospitals that indicate a willingness to send staff and resources should be aware that they may not get a request from HHS for several weeks.
Our prayers and thoughts continue to be with the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We are just now beginning to understand the magnitude of the challenges faced by our neighbors in the Gulf Coast region, and we encourage all AONE members to do what they can to assist.

1. ANCC NAMES NEW MAGNET HOSPITALS. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has announced that it has awarded the Magnet designation to the following hospitals:
-- Elmhurst Hospital Center, Elmhurst, NY (CNO: Eileen O'Neil, EdD, RN, Deputy Executive Director, Professional Services)
-- Stamford Hospital, Stamford, CT (CNO: Pamela Jamieson, MSN, MBA, RN, Senior Vice President of Patient Services)
-- Grant Medical Center, Columbus, OH (CNO: Suzanne DeWoody, MS, RN, CNAC, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer)
-- Saint Joseph's Hospital/Ministry Health Care, Marshfield, WI (CNO: Carol R. Wrahl, MSN, RN, Vice President of Patient Services)
-- Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, IL (CNO: Julie Schaffner, MSN, RN, Chief Operating Officer)
-- Craig Hospital, Englewood, CO (CNO: Kelly Johnson, MSN, RN, CFNP, CRRN, Vice President, Patient Care Services)
In addition, Middlesex Hospital, Middletown, CT (CNO: Colleen O. Smith, MSN, RN, CNA, Vice President for Nursing) was redesignated as a Magnet facility. There is now a total of 169 facilities.
2. FELLOWSHIP IN NURSING POLICY AND PHILANTHROPY ANNOUNCED. Applications and nominations will be accepted through September 30 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) for a fellowship position in nursing policy and philanthropy. The successful candidate will work closely with senior leaders at the foundation to shape a nursing workforce agenda and serve as a faculty member at the Center for State Health Policy, a policy research unit of the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research at Rutgers University. Candidates should have a strong background in nursing workforce management, research, and/or policy development, with particular focus on the relationship between workforce and quality in hospitals. Visit the RWJF Web site for more details.
3. NURSING DESIGNATED AS "AREA OF NATIONAL NEED." According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the U.S. Department of Education has designated nursing as an "area of national need" under the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program within the Higher Education Act. Nursing joins the list of national need areas that also includes biology, chemistry, computer and information sciences, engineering, geological sciences, mathematics and physics. As a result, new funding is now available to nursing schools that offer PhD programs. A call for applications for GAANN funding in FY 2006 was recently released, and schools of nursing are invited to apply for funding to offer fellowships to graduate students with excellent academic records who demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue a PhD program. DOE expects to award approximately 96 grants to schools of nursing, averaging $211,000 each. Click here for more information.
4. AONE SIGNS ON TO LETTER OF SUPPORT FOR EQUITABLE CNM REIMBURSEMENT. AONE recently joined several national nursing organizations in sending a letter to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA) expressing support for the Improving Access to Nurse-Midwifery Services Act of 2005, which would establish equitable reimbursement for obstetrical and gynecological services provided by certified nurse midwives. The letter urges Congress to address the current 35% disparity in reimbursement under Medicare for CNM services in comparison to other providers. In 2002, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) unanimously recommended that Congress examine the outcomes of similar professionals when setting reimbursement rates and increase reimbursement for CNM services.

AONE MEMBERS COLLECTING STORIES ON NURSE LEADERS' ROLES IN PATIENT SAFETY EFFORTS. AONE members Patricia Reid Ponte, DNSc, RN, FAAN, and Maureen O'Connor, RN, are seeking the assistance of AONE members in collecting stories of nurse leaders' pivotal role in creating and sustaining practice environments that advance patient safety. The stories will be used in a lecture they are delivering during this fall's annual Patient Safety Conference at Harvard Medical School and the annual University of Massachusetts School of Nursing Alumni Meeting in Amherst, MA. This work is being supported through the recognition and funding provided by AONE's inaugural McKesson Keeping Patients Safe Award that was presented to Dr. Reid Ponte earlier this year.
The purpose of the stories is to demonstrate the key role that nurses play in patient safety and the skills and strategies that have proven successful in assuring exemplary patient care. If you are a nurse leader, or know of a nurse leader, who has led with a bold strategy or approach to advance patient safety, please share your story! Some examples include the following:
- created avenues for frontline staff to be integrally involved in creating practice environments with a strong patient safety culture
- assured involvement of patients and families in care and quality and safety initiatives
- created successful approaches to interdisciplinary collaboration
- taken bold moves in advancing non-punitive approaches to medical error
- worked successfully with executive teams and boards of trustees to garner support for a patient safety culture
Stories can be short and simple, and photos are also welcome. Please send your stories by September 20 to Dr. Reid Ponte at: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney Street, D1624, Boston, MA 02115; preidponte@partners.org; (617) 632-4706 (fax). Please be sure to include the following:
- your contact information
- a statement indicating that you give permission to use your story and/or photo for the presentation; and
- if your photo includes other people, please indicate that, on behalf of each person, you are granting permission to use the photo
Thank you in advance for your participation!!!
