1. Hospital Associations Create The Care Fund.
2. AACN Applauds NAS Report Supporting Practice Doctorate.
3. CMS Solicits Proposals for Medicare Quality Demonstration.
4. Widespread IT Adoption Could Save $162 Billion Annually, Says RAND Study.
5. New Publication Helps Consumers Understand and Get Quality Health Care.
1. HOSPITAL ASSOCIATIONS CREATE THE CARE FUND. The state hospital associations in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama have established The Care Fund, which will provide financial support to hospital workers who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Many hospital workers lost everything while they continued to care for patients and neighbors. All donations to the fund, which will be administered by the three groups, will be disbursed to hospital staff in the three states. For more information, visit www.thecarefund.net.
2. AACN APPLAUDS NAS REPORT SUPPORTING PRACTICE DOCTORATE. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has announced its support for a recent report from the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) that calls for nursing to develop a "non-research clinical doctorate" to prepare expert practitioners who can also serve as clinical faculty. AACN also supports the report's recommendations related to doubling the number of nurse scientists and increasing the number of productive research years for nurses prepared in PhD, DNSc and other similar doctoral programs. The NAS report, titled Advancing the Nation's Health Needs: NIH Research Training Programs, is part of a series of reports monitoring changing needs for biomedical and behavioral research personnel in the U.S. The chapter on nursing focuses on the career trajectory for nurse scientists and includes recommendations for responding to the shortage of nurse investigators.
3. CMS SOLICITS PROPOSALS FOR MEDICARE QUALITY DEMONSTRATION. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is soliciting proposals for a five-year demonstration to identify, develop, test and disseminate ways to improve health care quality at the area or regional level, the agency announced last Friday. Physician groups, integrated health care delivery systems, or regional coalitions of such groups or systems are eligible to apply for the demonstration, which was required by the Medicare Modernization Act. The eight to 12 health care organizations selected to participate will be expected to show how they achieve the six quality aims identified by the Institute of Medicine in its 2001 report, Crossing the Quality Chasm, and those that do qualify for greater Medicare payments, CMS said. 4. WIDESPREAD IT ADOPTION COULD SAVE $162 BILLION ANNUALLY, SAYS RAND STUDY. Widespread adoption and effective of electronic medical record systems and other health information technology improvements could save the U.S. health system as much as $162 billion annually by greatly improving the way medical care is managed, greatly reducing preventable medical errors, lowering death rates from chronic disease, and reducing employee sick days, says a pair of new RAND Corporation studies released this week in the journal Health Affairs. "The potential savings from HIT is mind-boggling, but it isn't going to happen overnight," says lead author Richard Hillestad, senior management scientist for RAND. "The federal government will need to step in to speed the diffusion of HIT and remove some major barriers if we are going to reap the tremendous benefits it could have on improving quality, managing diseases, and extending people's live," he says.
5. NEW PUBLICATION HELPS CONSUMERS UNDERSTAND AND GET QUALITY HEALTH CARE. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released a new publication, Guide to Health Care Quality: How to Know It When You See It, to help consumers identify high-quality health care. The booklet is part of AHRQ is part of AHRQ's new consumer education campaign to help people take a more active role in their own health care. The booklet can be found online at www.ahrq.gov/consumer/guidetoq.
