1. ILLINOIS FACES CRITICAL HEALTH CARE WORKER SHORTAGE, SAYS NEW REPORT. Illinois must train 50 percent more health care workers annually through 2010 and invest a total of $40 to $50 million during that same time period to prevent a critical health care worker shortage in the state, according to a report released on Monday by the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council. The report, Caring for the Future: A Plan for Meeting Metropolitan Chicago's Growing Health Care Workforce Needs, predicts a nursing shortage, currently estimated at 2,500 in the Chicago area alone, will grow to 21,000 nurses statewide, or 19 percent of projected demand, by 2020. Other healthcare professions are facing a similar critical shortage. In order to address this shortage, MCHC recommends that a total of $40 to $50 million should be invested by the state in developing new faculty and expanding education and training programs. MCHC also calls for increased recruiting and support for health professions candidates, a reduction of regulatory barriers to expanding the healthcare workforce, and improved working conditions to reduce turnover and increase job satisfaction.
2. GEORGETOWN VOLUNTEER NURSING PROPOSAL RECEIVES FEDERAL FUNDING. An idea that came out of an undergraduate nursing class at Georgetown University last year has blossomed into a professional nursing corps called "Nurses for America," which has received a $20,000 grant from AmeriCorps (Corporation for National and Community Service). Nurses for America is the first nurse-focused AmeriCorps-funded grant. Georgetown professor Barbara Aranda-Naranjo, PhD, collaborated with colleagues, undergraduate professional nursing students, and the Rev. Tim Godfrey, S.J., director of Georgetown's Office of Campus Ministry, to obtain the grant, which will fund the recruitment, training and placement of nurses in underserved areas for a period of two years. In addition to the $20,000, nurse members who complete a one-year term of service will be eligible for education awards totalling $94,500 funded by AmeriCorps. The project will recruit 20 RNs each year for three years to serve as public health nurses at designated federally-funded community health centers, faith-based clinics and neighborhood clinics in the Washington, DC area, California, and Illinois.
3. JCAHO AND NQF ANNOUNCES 2005 EISENBERG AWARD RECIPIENTS. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the National Quality Forum (NQF) have announced the recipients of the 2005 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Awards. Audrey L. Nelson, PhD, RN, Director, Patient Safety Research Center, James A. Haley VA Hospital, Tampa, FL, is being honored with the Individual Achievement Award for leading an array of research to improve the quality of care delivered to people with disabilities. The award for innovation in patient safety and quality at a national or regional level is being awarded to the Maryland Patient Safety Center for its work in bringing together a public-private partnership of healthcare providers and policymakers to study and learn from errors. Meridian Health, New Jersey, and Sentara Healthcare, Virginia and North Carolina, are being honored with awards for innovation at a local or organizational level. Meridian has realized significant improvements in the quality of care just months after embedding evidence-based best practice guidelines into their computer-based physician order entry system. Sentara has established and continues to promote a system-wide culture of safety through a comprehensive, error-prevention initiative. The awards will be presented at NQF's 6th Annual Meeting on October 6 in Washington, DC.
4. NICHE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE REGISTRATION OPENS. Registrations are now being accepted for the NICHE Leadership Conference, hosted by the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University on February 27-28, 2006 in New York City. NICHE (Nurses Improving Care to HealthSystem Elders) is a national program designed to help hospitals more efficiently and effectively meet the special needs of older patients. AONE and the Hartford Institute have been frequent collaborators in the past on geriatric nursing leadership issues. At the conference, renowned nursing experts and nurses from experienced NICHE sites will share information on nursing models, measurement approaches, staff education and protocols to implement geriatric best practice. Attendees are also invited to the Clinical Update Conference, scheduled for March 1, 2006, which will feature cutting-edge, research-based information on geriatric nursing. For more information, visit www.nicheprogram.org or contact Marie Boltz at marie.boltz@nyu.edu or (212) 998-5567.
5. JCAHO ESTABLISHES HIT ADVISORY PANEL. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has announced the creation of a Healthcare Information Technology Advisory Panel to focus attention on the improvement of patient safety and clinical processes as new healthcare information systems are implemented. The panel, to be chaired by William Jessee, MD, president and CEO of the Medical Group Management Association, includes researchers, physicians, nurses, chief information officers, educators and healthcare organization leaders. Members will be asked to recommend ways the JCAHO accreditation process and the use of technology can be used to help reengineer patient care delivery and enhance safety, quality and efficiency, according to a JCAHO press release.
