1. CNA AUTHORIZES AFFILIATION WITH AFL-CIO. By a nearly unanimous vote, delegates at the California Nurses Association's biennial convention have voted to begin affiliation talks with the AFL-CIO. In a press release, the CNA said that the move "would enable CNA to help champion a transformation of the nation's health care system." CNA Executive Director Rose Ann DeMoro said that it would help CNA to resist the "aggressive agenda of the corporations and the far right and their allies in Washington and Sacramento and their escalating attack on workers, low and moderate income people, and unions."
2. AONE HONORED WITH 2005 BSN CHAMPION AWARD. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has announced that AONE has been selected to receive the 2005 BSN Champion Award. This honor recognizes organizations and practice settings that place a high value on preparing nurses in Bachelor of Science (BSN) degree programs. AONE was recognized for its Practice and Education Partnership for the Future initiative, which promotes the BSN degree as the desired educational preparation for the nurse of the future. AONE president Marilyn Bowcutt, MSN, RN, will accept the award on AONE's behalf at the AACN Fall Semiannual Meeting on October 23 in Washington, DC.
3. REPORT ADDRESSES MASSACHUSETTS' GROWING NEED FOR NURSES. A new report by the Massachusetts Association of Colleges of Nursing recommends strategies for addressing the state's growing shortage of registered nurses. They include increasing the percentage of baccalaureate and higher degree nurses practicing in the state and the number of nurses qualified to teach, and developing partnerships between healthcare facilities and nursing schools to expand and prepare additional faculty and clinical resources to support increased enrollment. The Massachusetts Hospital Association strongly supports the report's findings. (SOURCE: AHA News Now, September 29, 2005)
4. THOUSANDS OF EMERGENCY PHYSICIANS AND NURSES RALLY ON CAPITOL HILL. More than 3,500 emergency physicians and nurses came to the steps of U.S. Capitol on Tuesday to urge Congress to "save emergency care" and to make sure their patients continue to have access to emergency medical services. They also lauded the Access to Emergency Medical Services Act of 2005 (HR 3875), introduced last week by Representatives Bart Gordon (D-TN) and Pete Sessions (R-TX) and urged Congress to pass it quickly. "The U.S. health care system is collapsing, and nowhere is that more apparent than in our nation's emergency departments," said Frederick C. Blum, MD, FACEP, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) president Patricia Kunz Howard, PhD, RN, CEN, added, "Today, we are moving to protect the rights of our patients and colleagues by urging our legislators to partner with us to secure the future of emergency patient care by endorsing initiatives that alleviate crowding and support emergency care as an essential public service." A report released by ACEP showed that the number of emergency department visits increased 26 percent in the past decade while the number of emergency departments decreased by 14 percent, resulting in dramatic increases in patient volumes and waiting times. The majority of the nation's 4,000 hospital emergency departments reported that they are operating "at" or "over" critical capacity.
5. SENATORS CLINTON, OBAMA INTRODUCE PATIENT SAFETY BILL. Senators Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Barack Obama (D-IL) have introduced legislation to create a Department of Health and Human Services program they said would encourage disclosure and analysis of medical errors and early compensation for patients while reducing medical liability costs and offering liability protections for disclosures and apologies. The National Medical Error Disclosure and Compensation Act would create an HHS Office of Patient Safety and Health Care Quality, which would establish the program and an associated database to collect confidential patient safety data from participating doctors, hospitals and health systems. They said the proposal is modeled on similar private initiatives that have reduced liability costs while increasing patient safety and satisfaction. (SOURCE: AHA News Now, September 29, 2005)
6. AHRQ LAUNCHES NEW PROGRAM TO HELP CLINICIANS, PATIENTS IDENTIFY PROVEN TREATMENTS. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has launched a $15 million program to help clinicians and patients determine which drugs and other medical treatments work best for certain health conditions. Thirteen new research centers, as well as a center for communicating findings, were named as part of the new "Effective Health Care Program." By reviewing and synthesizing published and unpublished scientific studies, as well as identifying important issues where existing evidence is insufficient, the program will help provide better information for making treatment decisions. Initial reports will be issued this fall, with particular focus on effectiveness information relevant to Medicare beneficiaries. A new Web site, www.effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov, will be used to disseminate information from the program.

OCTOBER 1 DEADLINE FOR 2006 VOLUNTEER FORMS. October 1 is the deadline for submitting your 2006 volunteer form and volunteer to serve on an AONE committee or task force in 2006. "I invite all AONE members to consider the value of their AONE membership in their professional lives and the time and talent they can contribute to advance our organization during 2006," says AONE president-elect Kathy Sanford, DBA, FACHE, RN. The 2006 Call for Volunteers has been posted on the AONE Web site at www.aone.org and you can submit the form either online or by mail/fax. Forms must be submitted by October 1 to receive full consideration.
NURSING LEADERSHIP COMPENSATION SURVEY NOW AVAILABLE. AONE is pleased to launch the Nursing Leadership Compensation Survey, a new online, state-of-the-art compensation survey to provide current salary and benefits data for nurse leaders. Participation is free and open to all nurses in nursing leadership roles in hospitals and health systems, including nurse executives, vice presidents, directors, managers and supervisors. Just visit the AONE Web site at www.aone.org and click on the Nursing Leadership Compensation Survey link.
All participants will receive access to a complimentary survey report based on their professional level and geographic area. For more detailed salary information, individuals and organizations will be able to purchase real-time custom reports, which will be discounted for AONE members. Reports will be available in early 2006 in order to ensure adequate sample sizes.
You do not have to be an AONE member to participate, so we ask you to forward this invitation to your entire nursing management staff in order to promote a broad range of participants. More information will be mailed to AONE members during the coming weeks.
