As America’s population continues to age, care for older adults is more than ever before a core business of American health care. Consider the following:
The population of people age 65 and over is expected to double from 35 million to 70 million by 2030 and will comprise 20% of the population.
The number of Americans over age 85 will increase by 500% by 2040.
Inpatient acute care admissions from 2002 to 2027 are expected to increase 78% for person aged 65 and older and 16% for person aged 0-64.
Nearly half (47%) of all ICU patient are over age 65, which means that 18 percent of the U.S. population consumes nearly one-half of the nation’s critical care resources.
For America’s nurse leaders, the design of patient care delivery systems for this population is an increasingly important responsibility. We are pleased to offer these resources to assist members and others in improving nursing care for older adults.
REASN - Resourcefully Enhancing Aging in Specialty Nursing
AONE is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant by the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at the New York University College of Nursing as part of an initiative called REASN, (Resourcefully Enhancing Aging in Specialty Nursing). REASN is a 4-year initiative that works with specialty nursing associations to deepen their involvement in enhancing their members’ competency in caring for older adults and aims to bring up-to-date information on geriatric best practices to more than 200,000 hospital-based specialty nurses. The REASN initiative is funded with a $2.3 million dollar grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies (USA) Inc.
AONE as part of its geriatric initiative will be expanding the guiding principles for the Elder-Friendly Hospital/Facility and developing a complementary set of guiding principles specific to the role of the nurse leader in providing the elder-friendly hospital environment.
The REASN initiative will support the Hartford Institute’s geriatric clinical content Website, ConsultGeriRN.org. ConsultGeriRN.org continues to be the resource for nurses on evidence-based clinical protocols and topics on the care of older adults.
The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing
Since its inception in 1996, the mission of the Hartford Institute has been to shape the quality of nursing care to older adults by assuring geriatric competency of America’s nurses. The Hartford Institute, developed with core funding from The John A. Hartford Foundation, is recognized as unique in academic nursing in its focus on disseminating best practices to nursing students, faculty, practicing nurses, and policy makers.
The Institute’s Web site contains a vast assortment of resources related to geriatric nursing, including articles, checklists, resource links, and other material. The Hartford Institute educates the public to expect best practice and encourages national leadership to establish best practice as the standard for geriatric nursing care.
Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders (NICHE) NICHE is a national leader in improving geriatric care in hospitals. Currently, over 280 hospitals have adopted NICHE programs. They share a common vision of providing exemplary care to older adults through implementing NICHE’s systemic approach to creating organizational change across disciplines. NICHE sites report improved patient outcomes, greater patient and nurse satisfaction, increased efficiency and marketability. Sites have exclusive access to several tools and resources plus participate in a community of learning where peers share knowledge and expertise.
Beginning in 2010 hospitals interested in becoming NICHE sites participate in a flexible, affordable, and comprehensive 6 week web based Leadership Training Program (LTP). Participants can conduct the training on site with no travel costs or time.
Some of the benefits of NICHE are:
A robust members-only website which houses an abundance of tools and resources including a knowledge center with unlimited contact hours and geriatric specific training and education.
E-learning webinar series with expert hosts, featuring the latest research, best practices, and organizational strategies to improve clinical outcomes.
National benchmarking measures
Participation in a thriving online community to share knowledge with peers in hospitals around the country.
Nurse Competence in Aging (NCA) (2002-2007)
Nurse Competence in Aging (NCA) was a 5-year initiative funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies (USA) Inc., awarded to the American Nurses Association (ANA) through the American Nurses Foundation (ANF), and represented a strategic alliance between ANA, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, New York University, College of Nursing.
AONE was a recipient of a two-year NCA grant to create the AONE Geriatric Nursing Leadership Special Interest Group and develop a position paper on principles for creating elder-friendly patient care environments. The SIG held a “Day of Dialogue” meeting in the fall of 2005 to discuss implementation of the elder-friendly principles.
