As America’s population continues to age, care for older adults is more than ever before a core business of American health care. Consider the following:
-
The population of people age 65 and over is expected to double from 35 million to 70 million by 2030 and will comprise 20% of the population.
-
The number of Americans over age 85 will increase by 500% by 2040.
-
Inpatient acute care admissions from 2002 to 2027 are expected to increase 78% for person aged 65 and older and 16% for person aged 0-64.
-
Nearly half (47%) of all ICU patient are over age 65, which means that 18 percent of the U.S. population consumes nearly one-half of the nation’s critical care resources.
For America’s nurse leaders, the design of patient care delivery systems for this population is an increasingly important responsibility. We are pleased to offer these resources to assist members and others in improving nursing care for older adults.
AONE Geriatric Nursing Leadership Special Interest Group
AONE has created a Special Interest Group for members who have an interest in geriatric nursing leadership. The SIG hosts a listserv for the electronic exchange of information and inquiries on geriatric nursing leadership. If you would like to join the listserv, please send an email request to aone@aha.org.
Nurse Competence in Aging
Nurse Competence in Aging (NCA) is a 5-year initiative funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies (USA) Inc., awarded to the American Nurses Association (ANA) through the American Nurses Foundation (ANF), and represents a strategic alliance between ANA, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing, New York University, The Steinhardt School of Education, Division of Nursing. NCA has three components:
-
Enhancing the geriatric activities of national specialty nursing associations by awarding planning and implementation grants and providing technical assistance
-
Providing a Web-based comprehensive geriatric nursing resource center
-
Promoting gerontological nursing certification
AONE is pleased to be a recipient of a two-year NCA grant to create the AONE Geriatric Nursing Leadership Special Interest Group and develop a position paper on principles for creating elder-friendly patient care environments (to be published in 2005). The SIG plans to hold a “Day of Dialogue” meeting in the fall of 2005 to discuss implementation of the elder-friendly principles.
NCA is the sponsor of GeroNurseOnline, a comprehensive Web site providing current best practice information on care of older adults.

The John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing
Housed in the Division of Nursing at New York University, The John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing “seeks to shape the quality of health care older Americans receive by promoting the highest level of geriatric competence in all nurses.” The Institute identifies and develops best practices in nursing care of older adults and infuses these practices into the education of every nursing student and the work- environment of every practicing professional nurse.
The Institute’s Web site contains a vast assortment of resources related to geriatric nursing, including articles, checklists, resource links, and other material. The Hartford Institute educates the public to expect best practice and encourages national leadership to establish best practice as the standard for geriatric nursing care.
Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders (NICHE)
NICHE is a program of The John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University designed to “achieve systematic nursing change that will benefit hospitalized older patients.” The vision of NICHE is for all patients 65 and over to be given sensitive and exemplary care. The mission of NICHE is to import principles and tools to stimulate a change in the culture of healthcare facilities to achieve patient-centered care for older adults.
Currently operating in more than 140 active sites in 34 states as well as parts of Canada and The Netherlands, NICHE provides materials and services to stimulate and support the planning and implementation process for nursing care of older adults. Participating hospitals have reported:
-
Enhanced nursing knowledge and skills regarding treatment of common geriatric syndromes
-
Greater patient satisfaction
-
Decreased length of stay for elderly patients
-
Reductions in readmission rates
-
Increases in the length of time between re-admissions
-
Reductions in costs associated with hospital care for the elderly
The NICHE Web site contains a wealth of resources related to the care of older adults, including a tool kit of strategies that can help hospitals substantially change the way they deliver nursing care to older adults.
