It is abundantly clear that nursing leadership is crucial in changing the way health care is delivered. It is also abundantly clear that patient safety issues are a driving force in health care delivery systems nationwide. The Institute of Medicine estimated that medical mistakes may result in as many as 98,000 deaths and cost as much as $29 billion dollars annually (2000).
