The Leadership Laboratory is a blended learning program (online work and conference call) held over a six month period. The program is a fresh format for the leadership development of nurse managers and is facilitated by Dr. Barbara Mackoff. Grounded in peer-to-peer consultation and evidence based management, this program maximizes opportunities for managers to advise each other and convey wisdom and best practices in dealing with shared leadership issues in the context of evidence based management.
What to expect:
Each monthly Leadership Lab is organized around one of six key leadership practices. The lab consists of interactive discussion posts, videos and periodic readings and assessments leading up to a Live Learning Lab. Leadership topics include: motivation, communication in conflict, strategic time investment, building trust and creativity, emotional mastery, and change agility.
The Live Learning Lab is a monthly call where Dr. Mackoff explores the latest research on that month’s leadership practice and engages the participants in dialogue with each other. She illustrates each practice by drawing upon the case examples and experiences from the discussion posts and conversation.
Participants can expect to spend approximately 1.5 hours on online work leading up to the Live Learning Lab and 1.5 hours on the Live Learning Lab call.
What makes this different?
The Leadership Laboratory, in contrast to instructor focused seminars and webinars, is designed to allow both the facilitator and the participants to advise, educate, and coach each other.
What is the impact?
Through interactions with colleagues from across the country, nurse managers have the opportunity to develop expertise on topics and challenges relevant to their leadership practice. Groups from the same facility are encouraged to participate together to reinforce learning.
Continuing Education Contact Hours:
This workshop is approved for up to 18 continuing nursing education contact hours (all course work and attendance at live lab calls must be completed to earn all hours).

“This [leadership laboratory] has been very informative for me as a new Nurse Manager! Not only have I garnished wise examples of successful practice, but I know that I am not alone with all these issues! Meeting monthly with other Managers in my facility has created a great rapport and support system as well. Thank you Barbara and staff!”
