Tim Porter-O'Grady, DM, EdD, ScD(h), APRN, FAAN, FACCWS
(GCNS-BC, NEA-BC, CWCN, CFCN)
Dr. Tim Porter-O’Grady has been involved in health care for 43 years. He is noted for his work on shared governance models, clinical leadership, conflict, innovation, complex systems, and health futures. Tim is currently senior partner of an international healthcare consulting firm in Atlanta specializing in health futures, organizational innovation, conflict and change, as well as complex health service delivery models. Tim has published extensively in health care with over 175 professional journal articles and 22 books, including his seminal work Shared Governance for Nursing: A Creative Approach to Professional Accountability, and is an 8-time winner of the AJN Healthcare Book of the Year Award. He has consulted internationally with over 600 institutions and has lectured in over 1200 settings internationally. Among a number of honors, Tim has been recognized by American Organization of Nurse Executives with their Lifetime Achievement Award and by the American Nurses Association with the Luther Christman Award.
Jane Llewellyn, PhD, RN, NEA-BC
Dr. Jane Llewellyn was involved in the establishment of one of the first shared governance models in the country at Rush University Medical Center. She spent most of her career at Rush where upon her retirement in 2011, she was Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer, at the Medical Center and Associate Dean for Practice in the College of Nursing. As CNO she nurtured a culture of shared governance and was particularly involved in developing the leadership skills of staff nurse leaders. She was also an early champion for the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program™ and as CNO she led Rush through three successful magnet designations.
Marjorie Maurer, RN, MSN, NEA-BC
Marjorie Maurer is the VP Operations/CNE at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital where she is responsible for overall nursing, clinical services, and operations for the organization. Under her leadership, the organization attained the ANCCs Magnet Designation in 2009 with zero deficiencies and 6 exemplars and again most recently completed a successful site visit for Magnet Re-designation in January of this year. Marj was also very involved with the organization’s obtainment of the Gold Level Illinois Excellence Award in 2010, as well as the National Malcolm Baldrige Organizational Quality Award of that same year. Marj is board certified through the ANCC in Advanced Nursing Administration and has earned post graduate training in leadership coaching and project management.
She currently serves on four boards including the Illinois Organization for Nurse Leaders where she is past President 2010 and has been recently appointed to the Illinois Board of Nursing for the state of Illinois.
Strong leadership is core to successful shared governance. Effective leaders use the structure of shared governance to build a culture of excellence, where nurses have accountability and responsibility for nursing care. This workshop brings together individuals and teams with leadership roles in shared governance-from the chair of a unit council to the CNO of the organization--to focus on developing leadership skills and behaviors specific to leading in a shared governance environment. Groups from the same organization will benefit from this interactive workshop to discover together what effective leadership involves and the impact it can have. Topics covered will include leadership characteristics and behaviors for effective shared decision making, vision setting, outcomes development, ensuring success and sustainability of a shared governance model, and critical skills to effectively build a team and run meetings.
Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of AONE leadership competencies as they relate to shared governance leadership
2. Describe how shared governance contributes to cultural and service excellence
3. Discuss guiding concepts for successful shared governance structures.
4. Describe skills and tools at each level of leadership needed for successful shared governance implementation and sustainability.
5. Discuss strategies for maximizing accountability and decision-making.
6. Identify leadership models for special shared governance applications/structures such as ambulatory settings, system models and union environments.

Cancellations made by August 31, 2015 for the September 14-15 program, will receive a full refund minus a $75 processing fee. No refunds will be made after August 31, 2015. All cancellations must be submitted in writing to Kelsey Irish at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Registrants unable to attend may send an alternate. If the alternate is not a member of AONE and the original registrant is a member, the nonmember differential must be paid.
