Tim Porter-O'Grady Receives AONE 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award

Chicago, IL (February 12, 2010) - Tim Porter-O’Grady, DM, EdD, ScD(h), FAAN, is the recipient of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award. This award honors an AONE member who is recognized by the broader nursing community as a significant leader in the nursing profession and who has served AONE in an important leadership capacity—demonstrating the qualities of leadership and service to the nursing profession by their professional and personal example. Porter O’Grady will be honored at an award presentation during the AONE 43rd Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Ind. on April 10, 2010.
Dr. Porter-O’Grady has spent the last 40 years working in health care and has held roles from staff nurse to senior executive in a variety of health care settings. He is currently senior partner of Tim Porter-O’Grady Associates, an international health care consulting firm in Atlanta specializing in health futures, organizational innovation, conflict and change, as well as complex health service delivery models. He is noted for his work on shared governance models, clinical leadership, innovation and complex systems.
As associate professor and leadership scholar at Arizona State University’s program in health innovation, he has co-lead the implementation of new masters and PhD programs in health innovation. Porter-O’Grady is also a visiting professor in the hybrid doctor of nursing practice (DNP) program at the University of Maryland, and is an adjunct professor at Lakehead University’s School of Public Health in Ontario, Canada.
Dr. Porter-O'Grady holds degrees in nursing, clinical administration, learning behavior and organizational health systems leadership. In addition, he received an honorary doctor of science degree from the Medical University of Ohio in Toledo. He has completed post-doctoral work in aging and is dual board certified as a nurse executive and advanced practice in gerontology. He is also certified by the Georgia Supreme Court’s Office of Dispute Resolution as a registered mediator and arbitrator.
Porter O’Grady has published extensively in health care, having written 175 professional journal articles and 21 books. He is a seven-time winner of the American Journal of Nursing Healthcare Book of the Year Award. His most recent books include The Quantum Leader: Applications for the New World of Work and Innovation Leadership: Creating the Landscape of Health Care with co-author Kathy Malloch , and Interdisciplinary Shared Governance: Integrating Practice, Transforming Health Care (2nd ed.).
Porter-O’Grady has consulted and lectured across the globe at more than 500 institutions and in more than 1,000 international settings. He has held a number of offices in professional associations, as well as in national and community boards, including the vice chair of the governing board of Catholic Health East, governor of Sigma Theta Tau International, president of the Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation and president of AID Atlanta. He has been a key presenter and faculty member for AONE’s work with Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) since 2007, as well as faculty for the AONE Nurse Manager Fellowship Program since 2008. He also played a significant role in the development of the AONE Guiding Principles for the Role of the Nurse in Future Patient Care Delivery and has been a plenary session presenter at AONE annual meetings.
