Chicago, IL (August 27, 2010) — The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) is pleased to announce that Pamela A. Thompson, MS, RN, CENP, FAAN, AONE chief executive officer and American Hospital Association (AHA) senior vice president for nursing, has been ranked #33 on Modern Healthcare’s 2010 list of the “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare”. Thompson’s inclusion among other nurses is a strong sentiment to the growing understanding in Washington and across the nation of nurses’ importance in the evolvement of health care delivery systems.

In her role as AONE CEO, Thompson represents nurse leaders on a number of initiatives including healthful practice workforce environments, quality and safety, and the design of future patient care delivery via the nationally-recognized Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) initiative. In her role as AHA senior vice president for nursing, Thompson leads a coordinated internal team effort dedicated to workforce issues including shortages, healthful practice environments, and recruitment and retention.

We are all very proud of Pam for this incredible achievement,” said AONE president Pamela T. Rudisill, MSN, RN, MEd, NEA-BC. “During her ten years as CEO of AONE, she has led the organization with a spirit of collaboration and the steadfast conviction of providing resources and advocacy to nurse leaders of all levels.”

I am honored to be included in Modern Healthcare’s “100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare” list this year,” said Thompson. “I am pleased to share this recognition with the growing number of nurse colleagues included on this list. Although it is humbling to be individually recognized, to me this honor represents the growing influence that AONE and its members have in shaping health care delivery.

Other notable nursing colleagues appearing on Modern Healthcare’s list this year include Mary Wakefield, administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration; Rebecca Patton, president of the American Nurses Association; Linda Aiken, director of University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research; Geraldine “Polly” Bednash, chief executive officer of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing; Beverly Malone, chief executive officer of the National League of Nursing; Sister Carol Keehan, president of the Catholic Health Association; and Sister Mary Jean Ryan, president of SSM Healthcare.
