Chicago, IL (December 10, 2010) —The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) this week announced a new organizational mission statement—“To shape health care through innovative and expert nursing leadership.” The new mission, approved by the AONE Board of Directors, will be incorporated into the 2011-2013 AONE Strategic Plan.
The change in mission began in early 2010 when the AONE Board, with the assistance of a third party facilitator, began to explore the organization’s current and future direction. As part of this exploration, the Board examined AONE’s mission and vision statements. The AONE membership was also surveyed and provided input. Through this process, the AONE Board determined that the previously defined vision—shaping the future of health care through innovative nursing leadership—had become the essence of the organization’s mission.
AONE’s mission statement had remained unchanged for the last 10 years,” said AONE chief executive officer, Pamela A. Thompson, MS, RN, CENP, FAAN, “During these years, the organization, as well as the health care environment and our membership, has grown and changed. In 2010, the timing felt right to re-examine the AONE mission statement.
AONE 2010 president, Pamela T. Rudisill, MSN, RN, MEd, NEA-BC, added, “It was an exciting revelation when we realized that what we had aspired to influence 10 years ago has now become a reality. AONE and its membership are shaping the future of health care. We are enthused about the work ahead, as nursing and nursing leadership continues to play such a large role in the delivery of care.
The new mission will guide the organization in its ongoing strategic priorities in the areas of future patient care delivery, healthful practice environments, and quality and safety. AONE supports nurse leaders of all levels through research opportunities, advocacy representation and educational support.
