AONE Announces 2011 Award Recipients

Chicago, IL (April 1, 2011)—The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE)  and the  AONE Foundation, a 501(c)(3) supporting organization, have selected the recipients of three recognition awards, which  highlight AONE members and an AONE chapter who have demonstrated the “best of the best” in leadership practice, and whose work sets an example for every nurse leader.

The recipients, to be honored during the AONE 44th Annual Meeting and Exposition, April 13-16, 2011 in San Diego, are:

AONE Foundation Mentor Award

Roxane Spitzer, PhD, MBA, RN, editor, Nurse Leader, Stuart, Fla.
Throughout her career as a consultant, chief nurse executive, author and editor, Dr. Roxane Spitzer has served as a mentor for nurses, nurse leaders and health care administrators. She has been an exemplar and a model of leadership practice for health care leaders, always maintaining an endless energy for being a consistent mentor and motivator.

In her current role as editor of Nurse Leader magazine, Dr. Spitzer works with nurses across the country as they tell their stories and disseminate evidence related to the practice of nursing leadership. She works with each contributor, recognizing their uniqueness and building on their strengths. Spitzer has also held the roles of chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Nashville Hospital Authority in Nashville, Tenn., vice president of patient services at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, as well as associate dean of the School of Medicine and School of Nursing at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Maureen White, RN, MBA, senior vice president and chief nurse executive, North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, New Hyde Park, N.Y.
Maureen White is the leading voice for over 10,000 nurses at North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System (NSLIJHS) where she guides, promotes and advises on the development of nurse executive leadership at every opportunity.

One of her most significant accomplishments is the development of the Institute for Nursing at NSLIJHS, which promotes the art and science of nursing through innovations in education, practice and research. By establishing the Institute for Nursing, White has ensured a mechanism to support the growth and development of all 10,000 nurses. Under the auspices of the Institute, innovations in education and practice are developed, implemented and sustained.

Linda Porter-Wenzlaff, PhD, RN, CENP, NEA-BC, associate professor, department of health restoration & care systems management, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Nursing, San Antonio, Texas

Dr. Porter-Wenzlaff is a distinguished teaching professor with 33 years devoted to baccalaureate nursing education in Indiana and Texas. Over the past two and a half years, she organized and led the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Nursing through deliberate, multifaceted activities to establish an environment of enhanced cultural competency.

In addition, Porter-Wenzlaff mentored and supported another faculty member to establish the International Nursing Student Association which has become a large and active organization celebrating diversity and supporting activities that increase understanding, student inclusion and success. Porter-Wenzlaff is a member of the AONE Diversity Committee.

The Ohio Organization of Nurse Executives (OONE), Columbus, Ohio
The Ohio Organization of Nurse Executives was selected as one of three states for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing's (NCSBN) Transition to Practice pilot project, an expansive initiative of NCSBN that provides a way to empower and formalize the journey of newly licensed nurses from education to practice. OONE obtained endorsement for this pilot program from nurse leaders, nurse educators, the Ohio Board of Nursing, the Ohio Hospital Board of Trustees and other leaders from acute care hospitals across Ohio, and recruited 66 Ohio hospitals to participate in the study.

The commitment and work of OONE to promote newer and more effective transition to practice models for Ohio nurses demonstrates a high level of nursing leadership influence in advancement of nursing practice, patient safety and quality, and recruitment and retention. Their focus on the importance of collaboration with key stakeholders in achieving outcomes for the present and future has inspired a higher standard of excellence in leadership.
