Chicago, IL (Friday, December 2, 2011) —John Welton RN, PhD, is the recipient of the AONE Foundation for Nursing Leadership Research and Education’s 2012 Nurse Researcher Award. This award recognizes a nurse researcher who has made significant contributions to nursing research and is recognized by the broader nursing community as an outstanding nurse researcher. Dr. Welton will be honored at an award presentation during the AONE 45th Annual Meeting in Boston on March 24, 2012, where he will also deliver the annual AONE Foundation Lecture, Value-Based Nursing.

Currently, Welton is dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. Previously he served on the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore and the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing in Charleston.  A nurse for more than 30 years, Welton is recognized internationally for his work in nursing intensity, nursing economics and workforce issues and nursing administration. As a nurse scientist, he has focused most recently on the value of nursing.

A longtime and active member of AONE, Welton has worked closely with AONE colleagues to change national health policy to recognize the economic value of nursing care. From 2006 to 2010, he served on the AONE Centers for Medicare &Medicaid Services Task Force, which was formed to make recommendations to the AONE board and members on how to incorporate nursing intensity in claim and patient discharge data. Since 2006, he has been consulting with a large national health care system to find ways to better understand nursing intensity and costs and, ultimately, to optimize nursing care to achieve the best nursing care at the best possible price.

Welton has served as principal investigator and co-investigator for a wide-ranging list of funded research studies and has published extensively and consulted and presented widely for professional, health care, higher education and corporate organizations. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Nursing Administration. He is the recipient of multiple awards, including the North Carolina Great 100, South Carolina League for Nursing Award for Excellence, the South Carolina Governor's Distinguished Professor Award, and the Medical University of South Carolina's Educator/Lecturer of the Year.

Welton has a clinical background in critical care and flight nursing and, as an entrepreneur, started an air ambulance company earlier in his career. He has a bachelor of science in nursing from Skidmore College, a master of science in nursing administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a doctorate in nursing with a minor in medical informatics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
