Maryann F. Fralic to receive AONE 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award

Chicago, IL (Friday, February 10, 2012) Maryann F. Fralic, RN, DrPH, FAAN, is the recipient of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award. This award honors an AONE member who is recognized by the broader nursing community as a significant leader in the nursing profession and has served AONE in an important leadership capacity, demonstrating the qualities of leadership and service to the nursing profession by their professional and personal example. Dr. Fralic will be honored at an award presentation during the AONE 45th Annual Meeting and Exposition in Boston on March 22, 2012.
Fralic is a national and international consultant, author and lecturer in nursing, health care issues and nurse executive practice. She has served as the chief nursing officer at hospitals ranging in size and type from 200 beds to 1000 beds, from small community hospitals to premier academic health centers. She is currently professor and director of corporate and foundation relations at the Johns Hopkins University school of nursing, department of health systems and outcomes in Baltimore, MD. She is also executive advisor emeritus for the Nursing Executive Center of the Advisory Board Company in Washington, DC, and was a senior consultant for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Executive Nurse Fellows Program. She holds an academic appointment with the Johns Hopkins University-Bloomberg school of public health, department of health policy and management, and the Johns Hopkins Carey business school. Her professional passion is helping to carefully equip nurse leaders--at all levels--with the cutting-edge knowledge and complex skills essential for contemporary nursing leadership practice.
An expert in health services administration and executive nursing practice, Fralic continuously explores emerging issues in nursing education, research and practice and melds them together to inform the future of nursing. At the Johns Hopkins University school of nursing and in hospitals, community-based practice, and the arenas of clinical nursing, education and research across the country, her expertise, advice and administrative acumen make her a widely sought after speaker, author, educator and mentor.
She has been a longtime, active member of AONE, joining the organization in 1975 and serving on the AONE board of directors from 1985 to 1986. She was founding chairman of AONE's former committee on research, and served as editor of the AONE book, Staffing Management and Methods. Fralic was appointed by then Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala to serve as member and chair of the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice of the Health Resources and Services Administration from 1996 to 2000. She was a trustee of the American Nurses Foundation and the Institute for Nursing Research of the National Institutes of Health. She is also a founding board member and a past president of the Friends of the National Institute for Nursing Research (FNINR). She was elected to fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing and the National Academies of Practice 1990, and was a fellow in the Johnson & Johnson-Wharton program in management for nurses in 1986.
Fralic earned a doctorate in health services administration from the University of Pittsburgh, where she developed curriculum and taught in the graduate program in nursing administration. She received Distinguished Alumni Fellow Awards from both the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University. She was inducted by the University of Pittsburgh chancellor in 2000 as an inaugural Legacy Laureate, the highest honor that the University bestows on its alumni.
