Chicago, IL (Friday, March 16, 2012) The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) will present Donald M. Berwick, M.D., former administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), with its 2012 Honorary Member Award. This award recognizes a person who has made a noteworthy contribution to the health care field and has supported the mission of AONE through work, research or service to the health care community. Dr. Berwick will be honored at an award presentation during the AONE 45th Annual Meeting and Exposition in Boston on March 22, 2012.

Berwick co-founded the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and served as its president and chief executive officer for nearly 20 years. At the IHI, he worked with nurses and doctors to enhance care at hundreds of hospitals across the country and led national efforts to standardize treatments, eliminate health care-acquired infections and improve efficiency. Berwick’s emphasis on using scientific methods, evidence-based medicine and comparative effectiveness research has helped establish his reputation as one of the nation’s foremost experts on quality of care.

Prior to co-founding IHI, Berwick was clinical professor of pediatrics and health care policy at Harvard Medical School, and a professor in the department of health policy and management at the Harvard School of Public Health. Berwick has served as vice chair of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and chair of the National Advisory Council of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Additionally, Berwick was the first "independent member" of the American Hospital Association board of trustees.

An elected member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM), Berwick served two terms on the IOM's governing council and was a member of the IOM's global health board. He served on President Clinton's advisory commission on consumer protection and quality in the health care industry. He is a recipient of several awards and author of numerous articles and books, including Curing Health Care and Escape Fire.
