AONE Announces 2012 Award Recipients

Chicago, IL (Friday, March 16, 2012) - The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) has announced the recipients of its 2012 recognition awards, which highlight AONE members and one state chapter who have demonstrated the “best of the best” in leadership practice, and whose work sets an example for every nurse leader.
The recipients, to be honored during the AONE 45th Annual Meeting and Exposition, March 21-24, 2012 in Boston, are:
AONE Mentor Award

Elaine L. Smith, RN, MSN, MBA, NEA-BC, ANEF, vice president, system nursing education, North Shore LIJ-Health System, New Hyde Park, N.Y.
As vice president for nursing education at the North Shore-LIJ Health System, Elaine Smith’s career is replete with cutting edge, innovative approaches to education and learning. Among her many accomplishments are the establishment of a nursing leadership academy to meet the needs of emerging nurse leaders, nurse mangers and nurse executives transitioning into these new roles and the creation of the first system-wide perioperative fellowship program for new hires in the North Shore-LIJ Health System. Smith is sought after by both the most experienced and most novice of nurses to guide them along their educational path. She is highly respected within the organization and is frequently called upon by professionals in other disciplines to share her knowledge and to guide them through an educational process for their departments.

Dr. Stephen R. Marrone, EdD, RN-BC, CTN-A, deputy nursing director, Institute of Continuous Learning at the State University of New York - SUNY Downstate Medical Center - University Hospital of Brooklyn, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Dr. Stephen R. Marrone has held leadership positions in both the United States and Saudi Arabia, has presented and consulted in more than 10 countries, and is a recognized expert in the care of Arab Muslim patients and families. Marrone has championed successful health care and nursing diversity awareness programs and initiatives, enhancing the understanding of diversity issues within his health care organization, in the community and within the nursing profession.

Rhonda Struck, BSN, RN, MS, vice president, quality and patient safety, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Glendale, Wis.
Previous to her work at Wheaten Franciscan Healthcare, Struck served as leader for nursing informatics at University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics. Struck led an interdisciplinary team in partnership with an electronic health record vendor to increase clinicians’ satisfaction with access to information about patients’ unique history and needs, and to help clinicians feel supported to deliver individualized patient-centered care. Struck’s team successfully developed a “patient story” homepage for all inpatients admitted to the hospital. . The “patient story” is now the first page all clinicians see when they access an inpatient record. The health care team at UWHC has expressed that the initiative has been transformational in caring for their patients.
AONE Chapter Achievement Award
Maryland Organization of Nurse Executives (MONE)
The Maryland Organization of Nurse Executives (MONE) has demonstrated its commitment and dedication to truly making a difference and influencing nursing leadership through a number of strategic actions over the past several years. The chapter developed the MONE Nurse Manager Consortium which promotes nurse manager networking, educational development and sharing of best practices. Additionally, MONE created a nursing research collaborative for all Maryland hospitals that is conducting a study to identify the nursing research priorities in the state.
The MONE mission statement—to empower a cross section of dynamic nursing leaders with the knowledge and resources necessary to influence the delivery of health care through proactive, collaborative efforts—is seen in its strategic focus areas that are based upon the needs of MONE members. The chapter’s goals are intertwined with AONE’s organizational goals and strategies to provide a common platform both at the state and national level.
