Growing up in New England, May was always one of my favorite months. It was a time when I could safely say goodbye to winter and finally feel the warmth of the sun on my face.

Many years later May remains one of my favorites; as a nurse, May ushers in National Nurses Week, a time for reflection and celebration for the profession to which I have chosen to dedicate my life. One way I like to reflect during Nurses Week is to pick up either Notes on Nursing by Florence Nightingale or The Florence Prescription: From Accountability to Ownership by Joe Tye and Dick Schwab. Reading stories about Florence Nightingale keeps me grounded and reminds me of two very important things. As nurse leaders our work is never done; and secondly, we need to take time to celebrate ourselves. So as you begin to read this month’s issue, please take a moment and celebrate yourself and the leadership path you have chosen. You are the most courageous, passionate and dedicated nurses, whom I am so very proud to call my colleagues.
