The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this week issued interim guidelines for the care of pregnant women who may have been exposed to Zika virus, a mosquito-borne infection that can cause brain damage in a developing fetus. The virus has been confirmed in about a dozen U.S. residents who had recently traveled to countries where the virus is spreading, the Washington Post reported. The public is not at risk because patients with current Zika infections were likely infected by mosquitos abroad, not in the United States, the article said. State health departments in Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey and Texas have announced confirmed cases recently, the Post said.
