• Consideration of the Doctorate of Nursing Practice

    In 2002, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty [NONPF] began discussions around two emerging issues related to nurse practitioner education: ?credit creep? (the increased credit requirements for master's programs and the increased clinical hour requirements for credentialing) and the migration by other clinical disciplines to clinical doctorate education (PharmD, AuD, DPT).

    In 2004, the AONE Board of Directors released the AONE Guiding Principles for the Role of the Nurse in Future Health Care Delivery, which outline the work of the nurse in the future. The underlying framework of these guidelines is to first define the work of the future, which will then lead to an understanding of nursing's role(s); this, in turn, will define the educational preparation needed for this future nurse. Nursing's work of the future will be complex and challenging, and it will require a nurse with far different skills than we expect today.
