Our first full day began by meeting our People to People Ambassador Program national guide, Johan van Doesburgh, and our Johannesburg local guide, Kenny Takalo. The delegates and guests were given a brief overview of South African cultural history, as well as the current political climate of the nation. Apartheid, literally translated to mean ?separateness? in Afrikaans (the dialect developed among the Dutch speaking Protestant settlers and indentured workforce), was a system of legalized racial segregation enforced by the National Party government of South Africa between 1948 and 1990.
